I’ve started a series called Confessions of a Nutritionist . Today is about “Food trends and blogging”
Should we post recipes that readers are searching for, so our blogs has more traffic? Or share recipes that are really tasty, creative, and different?
I see some food bloggers sub an ingredient, or adapt one ingredient, or two, and called it a new recipe! Recipes that are almost identical!
Lots of food blogger, are sharing recipes that following the current food trends. Whether its about one popular food item (think cauliflower, waffle, butter, and so on). Or the fad diets, like vegan, paleo, gluten free, whole 30, and clean eating (Not all of these fad diets, but most people follow these diet, because some well-known people are following them).
I hate these terms, and labels! I’m not judging what people want to eat, but to have a blog that offer nothing new, but repetitive recipes is annoying me!
I know this is a free country. They can do publish what do they want, as they don’t break any law. But what do they add? Do you think of that as a blogger? When I start blogging I wanted to add value! (I hope I do) That was, and still my goal. Maybe other bloggers have different goals, such as venting, or sharing what they do.
Maybe I’m the one who doesn’t understand the concept of blogging!
***********************************************************************************************
While I was looking at my Pinterest analytics (You should have business account) they have stats with boards impressions, repins, and clicks.
While I have a board with more than thousand healthy recipes, a general ones. Most of my followers are following it. But funny enough, it doesn’t have so much repins, or even clicks!
Do you know what that means?
It means that people are pilling up healthy recipes. They didn’t even click on the pin to open the page, to check if they can apply, or recreate this recipe. On the other hand, I have other board for less healthier food, like guilty (I don’t like this term much, but I do believe some food are). Its has more clicks, and repins.
So most people keep healthy recipes to convince themselves, or others that they want to follow a healthy diet.
You maybe find me attacking, I’m not judging here. I do that sometimes.
It’s the unseen pressure to seek and make healthy food, and recipes. Mostly, because they are food trends, and we should give it a try! Or we are living in the ancient times!
Should’t be the other way? We bloggers break the conformity rule? That we post what we believe in? What we do in real life?
Healthy ingredients, and other fads that are trends now :
- Amarranth, and other ancient grains
- Unusual flours
- Flourless cookies, and cakes.
- Cauliflower.
- Chickpeas.
- Fermented food.
- Oils from fruits and other seeds (avocado, mustard)
- Ramen
- Matcha tea
- Gluten free recipe (whether its naturally gluten free, or using a sub to make it like that)
- Vegan recipes
- Paleo recipes
- Number of ingredients, like 3, 5, 7 and 10 only!
This is an interesting article about food trends in bonapetite magazine, and why we should care about them. It’s an interesting point, that I really did miss! That people are always looking for something new, so yes food bloggers want to offer new, and interesting!
Of course I don’t mind that! But when it comes to health, it’s different.
Promoting butter more, and more is not so healthy. Or promoting gluten free, or vegan diet for everyone, may leads to nutrients deficiencies. And so on with other new fad diets!
And if you are curious, here are nutrition trends for 2017 !
I read a blog post recently about food trends, I was curious what the blogger wanted to say. She has a good point, that some photos that are really professional, and fancy, makes people that don’t have many skills in cooking, avoid it.
I see it differently, this is a motive and a challenge! I am a foodie, has lots of free time (not really, but I always have time to cook), because it’s a priority for me.
Because some restaurants, that offer healthy meals. Most of them don’t offer the freshest ones. Once I went to local restaurant, which I really like, I ordered a salad, replaced spinach with kale. It was like a salad I created before! I’m not saying they stole my idea, but I was truly disappointed! It’s good, but It’s not fresh as I make it! And it did cost me 7$, why? I can make it with less than 5 dollars with more fresh ingredients!
So as a reader, what recipes are you looking for, especially the healthy ones? Are you following any trend?
And as blogger what do you offer for your readers? Do you think it’s ok to follow food trends?
