What does writing mean to me? Are there any differences between writing, and blogging? Are there any specific rules for blogging? Why does almost everyone have a blog? Is it the repressed freedom of expression, which resulted in this avalanche of words? Does hiding behind a computer screen give a sense of sanctuary?
When I was young, I used to think that writing was the ultimate way for introverted people. Because they do not have the ability, to express their opinions comfortably in face-to- face confrontations with the listener. I believed that they lack the courage, and not daring enough to vent the burdens fell on their shoulders. However, now I believe they are creative, and smart. I am confident that writers do not like to talk very much, as if pronouncing words audibly wrecking its glory, and reduces the glamour of the letters.
A few days ago, I read an article “Writing for Free” featured in the Atlantic magazine, based on article Slaves of the Internet, Unite! In New York Times (Sunday reviews section) About writing for free. He discussed how some websites, organizations, and publishers exploit writers, and asked them to write for free. Hence, why do bloggers write willingly for free?
I believe that some motives are psychological, such as the desperate need to be heard, and the feeling of respect that blogging gives. Besides, in the first world where everything begins, and becomes a trend all over the world is another reason why blogging has becomes so common. On the other hand, I believe that political, and social repression, in addition to the prevailing religious culture in the developing countries, is what’s made blogging the best outlet for many people. Finally, the easy access to internet connection has made the process of writing, and expressing opinions, and thoughts easier than ever before. That’s why bloggers “in my opinion” are working tirelessly for free.
What about Me? Who I am? Where do I belong? When people ask me, what do you do, I am silent and hesitate, what should I say? A blogger or a writer? Aren’t blogging, and writing physically the same? If blogging is not a type of writing genre, what is it then? Should I really identify myself? Why do I care?
When I read the question “A write or a blogger?” first time online, I said to myself, Thank God I’m not alone! Yes, writing and blogging are physically the same. (I’m not sure if blogging is now classified as a genre). I think the most vital difference between a columnist writer, and blogger is; that the blogger is not constrained by a contract, he/she is the holder of his, or her thoughts. No one edits it for him or her, no one controls the word limits (Exception: Some blogs are owned by a group of bloggers, and they have writing guidelines). I feel that bloggers have the liberty to express their opinions and thoughts, even strong ones.
Another difference between writers, and bloggers is; that blogging is a personal approach. The bloggers post their personal experiences, and thoughts about a product, a public issue, a service, or anything that comes to his/her mind. On the contrary, writers write from their professional prospective. (Exception: now many professionals have their own blogs, but the ones who consider themselves bloggers are the ones who write personal experiences).
I see this difference clearly in nutrition, and health fields. Many bloggers described their personal experience, and the great results they achieved after following a certain diet, or a product. This can be dangerous, because it’s based on a personal opinion not a professional one. Especially that some of them are well-known, and have huge numbers of followers, including blind ones.
The reason why I don’t consider myself as a writer is, because I believe that writing is for the knowledgeable people. It’s almost like a sacred act, the transformation of ideas, descriptions, places, and emotions into words is a dreamlike doing. Therefore, writing is created by articulate, and eloquent persons. Thus I’m not a writer! On the other hand, my posts are based on scientific facts, and study results that I keep myself updated on, I write my professional opinions, that’s why I would love to consider myself as a writer!
(I loved this photo, this is for all who are struggling in writing!)
But then again, I don’t consider myself as blogger either! Most of the bloggers share their personal experiences in every post; they may include their emotions, pictures of themselves, and their spouses, friends, even their budgets! And I don’t do that regularly(Update: I’m writing more personal posts now).
It was quite interesting to read whether bloggers think of themselves as writers or bloggers. I love that many bloggers think that blogs can be imperfect, therefore there is no need to track grammar, and writing mistakes.
This blog matters to me, because I want to know if I’m doing the right thing, for myself, my abilities, my future, and of course the most important thing my readers!
Are you a blogger or a writer? What do you think of yourself?
